Cultural Shift October 25 2014, 0 Comments
The world is amazing. Mankind is so diverse and full of beauty. Advances we’ve seen in the past 10 years in technology and communication has made globalization effortless. We’re able to integrate worldviews, products, ideas and other aspects of cultures different from our own into our lives. At times though, we get so wrapped up in our own little part of the world we forget to notice. Fashion is a good remind and way to incorporate other cultures. Doing so also adds incredible uniqueness to an outfit.
Even if you can make a trip to Mexico City or India any time soon, you can live vicariously through your clothes. Here are a few of our favorite OOTD's and pieces that have been influence by cultures other than our own.
What was the most amazing experience you've had with another culture? A trip? A meal? Go!
Fit Guide October 25 2014, 0 Comments
With new trends and pieces there will always be a learning curve when it comes to fit. Sometimes, these unfamiliar pieces and trends are hard to wear just because the fit is unlike what people are used to. For example; boyfriend jeans. How cute are boyfriend jeans?! We’ve all seen the street style pictures on Pinterest of the girl with her boyfriend jeans, basic shirt, statement necklace, clutch, and coffee looking chic and way too cool. Since the fit of your boyfriend jeans can mean the difference between fabulous and frumpy, here’s a how-to for choosing the right fit for some of the unfamiliar and of the moment trends we’re all dying to rock.
PS. All style examples feature the master mind behind MISRED, owner Sara!
- Choose your type of baggy
The slim fit style of boyfriend jeans work well if your top priority is figure flattery. If you want the true tomboy look, you can go super baggy. They are supposed to feel loose around your thighs and waist and look a little more “tomboy."
- Choose your Waistline
Most boyfriend jeans will have a mid-rise waist. If you go for the slim fit, you should be able to rock them without a belt or tucked in shirt. If you go for the ultra baggy style, you can decide where the waistline is by adding a belt.
- Choose your length
To add to that devil-may-care attitude of the boyfriend jeans, they are usually rolled up at the end. How high you roll them up is up to you. At 5’10, I prefer rolling them 2 or 3 inches above my ankle to downplay my height. If you are shorter, rolling them higher would lengthen your overall look.
This is SO important. To avoid the dreaded camel-toe that is all too popular with rompers, it is very important to find a romper long enough for your torso. If the size you normally wear is just too short in the torso, go up a size.
Since I have curvier hips, I prefer a high-waisted romper to accentuate my tiniest part. However, drop waist can look very modern and cool if you're comfortable with that look.
Short rompers are fun and playful. Pant rompers are ultra-chic. This part is up to you but here's a couple of tips. For the shorts, be mindful of the length. Although a romper isn't a dress, you could still encounter some unwanted indecent exposure if you go for too short of a hem length. For the pants, it is still important to make sure the romper is loose around your thighs and downward. Rompers are effortlessly cool and laid-back, so a skinny jean effect could take away from the intended look.
The fabric you choose can change the message of your look entirely. It can also mean differences in comfort. If you choose a silky fabric like the picture of Sara shown above, the look is elegant and adventurous. You can also go for a soft cotton or jersey fabric to be a fashionista even on your quieter nights.
- Length from waist to crotch
Harem pants have a longer length between the waist of the pants and the crotch than normal trousers. A drastic length between those things isn't a good look for everyone. A subtle drop can look stylish and be flattering.
These pants are supposed to be baggy near the thighs and tighter at the ankles. A less MC Hammer version is to have a more restrained flow from loose to tight. The difference in flare can also change your look from super-fashionista to causal cool.
So that's our take on how to find the right fit for some of our favorite and weird trends. How do you like yours to fit?
Beauty Dept. October 18 2014, 0 Comments
There is a lot that goes into styling that doens't have to do with clothes. Hair, make-up, and nails can bring invaluable individuality to an outfit. With the help of Harper's Bazzar and Pinterest, we've compiled some of our favorite hair and beauty trends for this fall.
We love this hairstyle. Braids are huge for fall and the chignon is so classic. The messiness of the look adds a cool-girl-who-can-do-what-she-wants vibe, and who doesn't want to give off that vibe?
If this hairstyle doesn't remind you of Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones, you're probably not a nerd like I am. Either way, this look is ethereal and gorgeous. Even without the striking platinum blonde color, the intricacy of the fishtail braid will let people know you're fashionable and really talented at styling your own hair.
Red lipstick can make a woman feel like she can devour a man and save the world all in the same day. A deeper, sexier version of the bold red lip is wine. This deep red color is so sophisticated we can't stand it. Check out all the different variations. To rock this lip color for everyday, I would stick with a more subtle look for everything else. That will allow the lips to be the focus.
For nails, we found this awesome guide on Pinterest with examples of the most popular colors for fall. I'm loving the hunter green. It's so unique and very modern.
What are you're favorite beauty trends? Are you still in love with ombre hair color after all this time? (Always). Let us know!

Smooth Transitions: Summer to Fall October 18 2014, 0 Comments
Any Florida girl knows, just because the calendar says October, that doesn’t mean it feels like it. We can, and do, take the matter into our own hands and try to will the weather into feeling like fall through our fashion choices. There are plenty of ways to transition your wardrobe into fall without looking completely out of place (not to mention feeling uncomfortably hot).
Light jackets are a simple way to do this. In the OOTD pictured below, we’ve paired a light denim army jacket with jewel-toned shorts and an eye catching statement necklace. Jewel tones are warm and perfect for fall and on shorts they make a perfect transition piece for Fall in St. Petersburg.
Another great way to take your look from the laidback vibe of summer to the chic vibe of fall is to trade your strappy sandals for a fabulous pair of ankle boots. Ankle boots aren’t as overwhelming on a day with a high of 85 as knee high boots would be. I also love the jacket on this OOTD. It is another extremely lightweight jacket but looks like an edgy leather jacket perfect for city life.
How are you transitioning into fall? We want to know!
Knot About It October 11 2014, 0 Comments
Sometimes it's hard to catch, but a lot of different trends share some tiny detail. It's amazing how the smallest things can become huge trends and connect so many different styles. Today, we're really into knots. That might sound weird but they are everywhere, from hairstyles to bracelets, and we're loving it.
Here's a few of our favorite knot inspired trends.
Knotting Oversized Belts
The Top Knot
Flannel Around the Waist
Woven Beaded Necklackes

Style Playlist - October October 11 2014, 0 Comments
Fashion inspiration can come from anything; runway, street style, and especially the music we listen to. In honor of that inspiration we’ve put together a playlist that stirs up our longing for crisp air and copious amounts of pumpkins. We’ve also added pictures of outfits that go seamlessly with the indie vibe of the songs. With the power of the Internet we found amazing graphic prints, tea length skirts, and the most inviting looking sweaters. Similar styles are here at MISRED just waiting for you.
Bon Iver – Towers
The Tallest Man on Earth – The Wild Hunt
Fleet Foxes – Mykonos
Betty WHO – Silas
Gregory Alan Isakov – The Stable Song
US Royalty – Equestrian
Gregory Alan Isakov – Unwrittable Girl
Louis Armstrong – La Vie En Rose
Iron & Wine – Flightless Bird American Mouth
Of Monsters and Men – King and Lionheart

There are many things in life that are subjective and art is one of them. But for this post, we’re going to trust that these songs are objectively fantastic and inspire warm feelings for the fall season as well as cozy wardrobe decisions.
What’s your go to fall song?
Make a Statement September 27 2014, 0 Comments
At MISRED we love to make a statement. Life is too short and beautiful to fade into the background. One way we love to do this is by adding a statement necklace to any outfit we can. Even a monochromatic ensemble can look unique with a bold statement piece.
Not only are statement pieces a big hit with us, they are being seen everywhere from the runway to magazines to celebrities.
Here's a few snaps from our Instagram showcasing some of our favorite pieces in the store.
Since you're a unique beauty, you should probably try out this trend for yourself! Be bold and make your outer style expression unavoidable to passerby's.
Also, if you're unsure where to start, we've just added a 50% off accessories section. So you really have no excuse to not display your personality with a little help from your jewelry.
Style Icon - Iris Apfel September 27 2014, 0 Comments
“Everything important in my life happened to me by accident.” – Iris Apfel, 2013
An iris is the circular membrane behind the cornea of our eyes. Less anatomically, irises are the parts of our eyes that people write songs about and the ones we love become especially fond of. They bring color to their black and white surroundings and bring out the uniqueness of who we are. Living up to her name, Iris Apfel has had a knack for doing just that for decades.
Iris Apfel is a 93-year-old businesswoman, interior designer, and fashion icon. In her 2013 interview with NY Times she explained, “Good design comes from self-expression, not copying someone else.” Iris has been carving her own path in this world since she was a young woman.
Two years after marrying her husband Carl in 1948, they opened their own textile firm, Old World Weavers, which was open until 1992. During that time, Iris was also part of design restoration projects at the White House for nine presidents. Adding to an already impressive resume, in 2012 Iris spent time imparting her wisdom to university students as a visiting professor at University of Texas at Austin.
Nine years ago, in September of 2005, an exhibition about Iris Apfel's style entitled 'Rara Avis (Rare Bird): The Irreverent Iris Apfel' premiered at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. They wanted her to showcase her accessories but do so in context. They wanted her to demonstrate how to use the accessories. Iris’s jewelry is as free and eclectic as she is. In an interview with NY Times she describes what style means to her by saying, “Style is attitude. It ain’t what you do, it’s how you do it.” Her individuality, fearlessness, and matchless designs are what made the exhibition such a success.
At 93-years-old, Iris Apfel is the poster child for not following the status quo. She is just as much an inspiration for living life to the fullest as she is an inspiration for personal style. When asked to provide three words she would use to define her out look on life she said, “Only one trip…might as well live it up.”
St. Pete Shuffle September 27 2014, 0 Comments
So it might be cliché, since I once heard St. Petersburg described as God’s waiting room, but one of the most enjoyable and hip places to be on a Friday night in downtown is the St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club.
Established in 1924 and initially called St. Petersburg Mirror Lake Park Shuffleboard Club, it was the first exclusively shuffleboard club in the world and it became the largest club of its kind.
Today, with game nights, a shuffleboard league, and the free St. Pete Shuffle on Friday nights, it remains a staple in our city and something we hope sticks around for another hundred years.
Shuffleboard is actually an exciting and competitive game to play with a group of friends and is enough reason alone for anyone to want to go to the club, but the St. Pete Shuffleboard Club is also surprisingly breathtaking at night. Many couples in the bay area choose to have their weddings and professional photographs done right at the club. The hanging lights and aged buildings provide a romantic experience that you probably would never expect to feel at a shuffleboard court.

Next time you're wondering what to do with your night, try out shuffleboard! You won't regret it.
What quirky gem in St. Petersburg is your favorite?
Trend Report September 20 2014, 0 Comments
From the pumpkin spice lattes to the trend reports, we can smell autumn in the air. The calendar says it is late September, and although the high’s of 90 in the middle of the afternoon would lead anyone to believe otherwise, the fall season is on it’s way. This season there are a few trends we are especially excited about and with New York Fashion Week coming to an end, we’ve found amazing street style snaps from the shows to illustrate our favorites for fall 2014.
What trend are you dying to try this fall?
Fashion Week Tampa Bay 2014 September 20 2014, 0 Comments
When you’re a self-proclaimed fashionista who doesn’t live in a major metropolis like Paris or New York City, it can be hard to cope during times like New York Fashion Week. But if you’re a fashionista living in Tampa Bay, we’ve got you covered. Here in the Bay Area we have our own distinctive fashion scene and celebrate our unique style with the annual Fashion Week Tampa Bay. This highly anticipated event allows brilliant Bay area fashion and accessory designers to present their work to retail buyers and consumers, both locally and nationally.
This week is not only a superb experience for attendees to see the potential and current artistry in Tampa Bay, but local models, business partners, and others in the community get to experience the energy and creative expression of high-fashion.
Owner of MISRED, Sara, and intern, Skye, were in attendance this week to represent MISRED and see the one-of-a-kind style you can only find here in Tampa Bay. At FWTB 2013, Sara sported an edgy and fun outfit complete with a printed mermaid skirt. This year her statement piece wasn't a piece of clothing...it was temporary tattoos! Which will soon be available in store.
So fret not! If you're living life in the Bay area, it's a good time to be a fashionista.
St. Petersburg Street Art Meets Style September 13 2014, 0 Comments
“I love the burg.” That statement is an instagram hashtag and a truth for anyone who has the pleasure of living in St. Petersburg, Florida. One of my favorite things about this city are the countless murals you can find anywhere in downtown. While admiring the art that’s right outside the stores backdoor, I realized the similarities between the pieces in MISRED and the amazing alley art.
This mural and OOTD share the same tranquility. The majority of blue in both of them provides a calming vibe but they are certainly not boring. Like the different sea creatures in the mural, the patterns on the dress demand attention. It’s also pretty cute that the necklace and turtle match.
Like the other pair, this mural and OOTD share the same color scheme and patterns. I love the vibrant green and pink in the mural, and they translate just as well in the outfit. Wearing the combination of green and pink always speaks confidence. While writing this, I noticed that the bag and the gorilla in the mural share the same chevron pattern. How crazy is that?
This is my personal favorite because I’ve always looked up to Frida Kahlo as a woman and an artist. Frida painted her art and emotion AND wore it. I love how this OOTD not only incorporates the colors from the mural but the wreath matches Frida’s hair accessories.
From the prints to the colors, the inspiration is there. Do you have a favorite piece of art in downtown St. Pete? Let us know and maybe we’ll create an outfit of the day inspired by that mural!
Bold Move September 13 2014, 0 Comments
Don’t let the white walls fool you; at MISRED we are 50 shades of crazy over bright colors and bold prints. Excuse my awful pun, but I really wanted to emphasize the point to you. Gone are the days of matching your shoes to your bag and your shirt with your skirt. Taking on a bold pattern in a bright color can be intimidating but when you know how to style your piece correctly, it can also be an enormous boost of confidence.
If you’re not quite sure how to style patterns and bold colors, here are a couple of tips. First of all, you can mix patterns but too much can be overwhelming. I’d say try a printed top with a textured bottom like this OOTD
Another tip when styling bright colors is to think about your skin tone. If you are fair skinned, I’d stay away from colors that can wash you out like yellows and oranges. A good go-to for a bright color when you’re unsure about what flatters you is a jewel tone. Pastels and neons can mean trouble for many people but jewel tones seem to make all skin types glow.
If you still aren’t sure if you can pull off a bright and bold print, start small. Maybe you can wear patterned flats or a cute headband and work your way up to those amazing jewel toned shorts pictured above. Bold prints and bright colors are attention-grabbing ways to show off your confidence and sense of style. So try it out and let us know how it goes!
Mix it Up September 13 2014, 0 Comments
Long time, no blog!
We’ve been doing a lot here at MISRED. While we’re still loyal to our vintage roots, we’ve started incorporating new items into our store...and our Outfits of the Day.
There is something to be said about the uniqueness of a vintage piece. As well as the bragging rights you get for finding it. Vintage clothing is one of a kind, fun, and it can be something different to everyone. But fashion, like art and life, is always evolving, and new pieces can capture the essence of the past while still being modern. Sometimes the look you’re going for needs the flair and uniqueness of a vintage piece. Sometimes a vintage look needs modern lines to keep your outfit balanced. There’s beauty and benefit to both new and old pieces and every OOTD posted here mixes vintage and new pieces.
So what do you think? Are you team new or team vintage? Or are you somewhere blissfully in the middle enjoying all the pretty clothes like we are?
Let us know!
